Floyd Strayer as Preston Smartly, Jim Winkler as Winky, and Shelley Smartly in the comedy TV series, THE SMARTLYS.
Melvin Powell as Thumper helps Jim Winkler as Winky The Stalker get into his suit of armor for The Royal Joust scene.
"God Said This, kicked off to an incredibly funny start, with the father, James, played by the formidable Jim Winkler, introducing himself at an AA meeting. It is so well delivered, so well written with irreverent humor that the entire audience was laughing; but like all great humor, its essence was the tragedy of his wife’s cancer and how that stress made him want to go back to drinking." --Review by Maria Bonfils, Drama in the Hood
Jim Winkler who plays 'Winky' was recently interviewed by Susan J. Farese, SJF Communications.
SJF: Tell us about your character in The Smartlys
JW: Winky is a lost soul, wounded, overlooked, baffled by life, but he has found in Shelley a muse, a reason to go on with life. He’s very simple; knowing her, being close to her and seeing the world through her eyes makes everything tolerable.
He doesn’t have an endgame in mind, no dark thoughts. He’s a very simple person. He really has only one need, to be in Shelley’s sphere of influence. But God help anyone who tries to take Shelley away entirely.
SJF: Are there any commonalities that you have with your character?
JW: My commonality with Winky is that I too, am obsessed by this ball of joy we call Shelley. I don’t mind if she’s married. I just need to be close. Also, she doesn’t know this but I am an avenging angel sent from the future to ensure her safety and continued reign of the Renaissance Fairs.
Yeah, I’m like Arnold Schwarzzenegger and she’s my Sarah Connor. If the universe is to survive, I must protect her at all costs.
SJF: What are 3 things about you we don’t know about ‘you’…(not your character)!
JW: I am a person who has wasted a lot of time writing plays and screenplays. My new direction is to write novels. Also time-consuming, but the payoff is that a good novel will always be a good novel and I won’t be looking for someone to put the play on or make the movie. I’ll just have to sell it once.
I have two stories I’m working on now, a kinda Rom-Com called The Personal Trainer and a Sci-Fi set in the future with a working title of Sanitation, where things are pretty much as they are today, except ridiculously bad. (Ironic, huh?)
SJF: Words of wisdom/advice for actors?
JW: Advice to actors; it’s an art, but we’re all human; we have to survive as best we can physically and mentally, so that when our “chances” come round again, we are present and able to grab onto that horse and ride.
So, in these hard times, be a calming presence against all the fighting, bickering, politics, violence and general unease. We have to get past this and survive to find out what’s actually going on, so we can be here to make good decisions tomorrow.
SJF: How can we follow you on social media? Any links to share?
JW: I am on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jim.winkler.710
SJF: Many thanks, Jim!
